Would you like to uncover the fascinating secrets of a city with more than two thousand years of history? We invite you to explore Tortosa through the Three Cultures Route, a guided tour that will immerse you in the legacy of the three major civilizations that, with a relative harmony, left their mark on the city over the centuries: the Muslim, Jewish, and Christian cultures.
The route begins at the site of one of the city’s two ancient synagogues, the boundary that separated the old Jewish Quarter from the new. From there, you will venture into the old Jewish neighborhood, where you can discover traces of the Jewish community that once lived in Tortosa, along with curiosities about their customs, lifestyle, and important historical figures from that time. Along the way, you will also learn about the influences of the Muslim and Christian cultures, especially in the city’s fortified area, which includes the impressive Zuda Castle. This castle was not only crucial for the defense of Tortosa, but also provides an in-depth view of the early Iberian, Roman, and Visigothic settlements in the region.
A key part of the city’s identity is its Renaissance splendor, and you can’t miss the Royal Colleges, an architectural gem from that era that marks one of Tortosa’s brightest moments in history. During the tour, you will also explore medieval monuments and learn about the unfinished Cathedral of Santa Maria de Tortosa and the miraculous appearance of the Virgin of the Cinta, the city’s patroness. The tour ends at the Plaza del Absis, where you can admire the renovated facade of the cathedral and enjoy breathtaking views of the Ebro River, which has witnessed the major historical events that have shaped Tortosa over the centuries.
