Built upon an Iberian settlement and the site of an old Muslim fortress, the 12th- and 13th-century complex is considered one of the finest examples of transitional Romanesque architecture—both religious and military—of the Knights Templar in the entire Western world. It served as the Templars' provincial headquarters in the Crown of Aragon, and between 1307 and 1308, it suffered a major setback under the reign of James II. The Order of the Temple was dissolved, and the castle passed into the hands of the Hospitallers, who held it until the Mendizábal confiscations of 1835. The castle is in a good state of preservation, despite the numerous wars that have taken place there—the Catalan Revolt, the War of the Spanish Succession, the Peninsular War, the Carlist Wars, and the Battle of the Ebro—as well as attempts at demolition. Miravet Castle has survived these conflicts and today stands majestically, one of the most visited monuments in the Ebro Delta region.
Underground tour through the Benifallet caves with explanations about their geological formation, history and curiosities of the space. During the visit you can see stalactites, stalagmites, gour columns and spectacular eccentric formations as well as outstanding spaces such as the Music Room. You also visit the Cave of Dos where remains of the Neolithic and the Battle of the Ebro are explained, all in a very unique natural environment.
