Miravet Castle, an imposing fortress surrounded by a 25 meter high wall that seems to emerge from the rocks and located on a hill, dominates the course of the Ebro and the surrounding lands.
This strategic position has led to successive settlements since prehistoric times and has meant it has played an important role in different conflicts.
Today you can still see part of the structures of an Andalusian fortress on which the Templar castle was built, immediately after the conquest of these lands by Ramon Berenguer IV. The castle was given to the Order of the Temple, which made it the seat of the Templar province of Catalonia and Aragon, during what would be the period of greatest power and splendor in the history of Miravet. The end of this stage also meant the most dramatic episode in its history, with a siege of more than a year, which preceded the disappearance of the Temple order.
Although, subsequently, the castle was remodeled to adapt it to the defensive requirements brought about by the appearance of artillery, the appearance and structures that have come down to us are essentially the work of the Templars. Thus, Miravet has become one of the best examples of Catalan military architecture from the 12th-13th centuries.
The Miravet Castle, considered the most majestic work of the Order of the Temple in Catalonia.
Place where the Templars suffered the greatest siege in their history. Sorcerers, heretics, tightwads, sodomites…
Do you want to know its history and, why not also, its mysterious legends…?
