The months following summer are a wonderful opportunity to discover this magical corner of southern Catalonia. The heat begins to ease, the days grow shorter and life takes on a slower pace after the busy high season.

Autumn in the Delta is shaped by the rice harvest and the migratory movements of birds. Many arrive to spend the colder months here, while others bid farewell until the following year.

The landscape transforms as the rice fields take on shades of brown and yellow. Some are still covered with water, and the whole area comes alive with movement and activity. It is the perfect season to discover the Delta’s unique character from a different perspective.

Here are three experiences to enjoy, whether you’re travelling alone or looking to share the adventure with others.

Birdwatching

  • Delta Birding Festival: An internationally renowned festival for birdwatching and nature enthusiasts. Over three days, visitors can enjoy a varied programme of activities, including talks, conferences, workshops, exhibitions and guided outings to discover the fascinating world of birds and deepen their knowledge of nature.

  • The Great Bird Show: Our specialist guided birdwatching tour takes you to some of the most interesting spots in the south hemisphere ensuring you don’t miss any of the species we encounter along the way.

Cycling Along the Camino de Sirga

Autumn brings ideal temperatures for cycling and exploring the area at a leisurely pace. With virtually no elevation gain, the route is accessible and enjoyable without requiring a high level of physical fitness, although it’s always worth keeping an eye on the weather.

The Camino de Sirga, between Amposta and the Migjorn area, offers an approximately 22 kilometre ride along the banks of the Ebro river, passing through villages, fields and stretches of riverside woodland. With the colours of the season transforming the landscape, it’s the perfect setting to cycle without rushing and let the river set the pace.

Kayaking or paddleboarding on the Ebro river

Exploring the final stretch of the Ebro river from the water is a unique experience that allows you to discover the landscape from a completely different perspective. Whether you prefer to paddle while seated in a kayak or fancy giving stand-up paddleboarding a try, the river offers plenty of opportunities to connect with nature. The river islands of Gràcia and Sapinya, the old river mouth of the Ebro at Migjorn, and the stunning landscapes of the bays of Els Alfacs and El Fangar are just some of the most idyllic spots to explore.
